It's likely due to a disruption where the wallet was abruptly shut down. It's always a good idea to have a copy of the wallet.dat and the blockchain as well. This way, if anything get corrupted you can be back up and running fairly quickly.
I restored it easily. I never saw a wallet get corrupted before. It was from a storm that caused a power out.
