I basically end up re-writing it all, but I can vomit out 1500 terrible words in 30 minutes which I can turn into 4-6k in a few solid hours. Would take 5x as long without the vomit.

I always read my own writing out loud. You're more likely to notice things. If you stumble over wording, or find yourself needing to take a breath by the end, you likely need to trim or rephrase. You might hear yourself say too many big words in a short amount of space, making its meaning impenetrable.
